Michael spent much of his younger years glued to his stereo, listening to what each band member was doing individually to make up a song as a whole. Dual guitars from the likes of Judas Priest, KISS, and many of the '80's hard rock bands intrigued him as they played two distinctly different parts to come together to form a wall of sound. This had Michael focus on the rhythm guitar as his instrument of choice, then expanded that into him playing the bass and keyboards as well. Today he can hear each instrument playing separately in his mind as he formulates a song. In the end, the forefront of it all are his guitars to make the songs rock!
